Early Childhood Special Education

DEPARTMENT MISSION:

The South Coast ESD EI/ECSE program is a child centered, family oriented program that provides learning opportunities for children and parents of children from 0-5 years old, improves the children's chances of functioning in regular education, and helps parents understand and cope with their child's disability.

DEPARTMENT VISION:

The South Coast ESD Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education program envisions an increasingly cooperative program with schools, parents and social services for 0-5 year-old identified children.

DEPARTMENT SERVICES:

EI/ECSE services are individually designed to address the special education needs of the young child with developmental delays or disabilities.  EI/ECSE preschool classrooms located in Coos Bay, Myrtle Point, Bandon, Brookings, and Reedsport provide children with structured learning opportunities, along with access to physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists, autism specialist, and teachers of the hearing and visually impaired. Some ESD preschools are taught by a speech pathologist and emphasize communication development. Infant/toddler groups, located in Coos Bay and Myrtle Point, serve children younger than three years, and emphasize the development of cognitive, motor social, communication, and self-help skills.

Services are provided in the Home/Head Start ECSE Skills class and at some parentally placed pre-school settings.  

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Coordination with a child's physician and other local agencies and professionals is available upon request. Consultations with preschools and day care centers and inservice training opportunities are available to assist outside agencies in serving disabled students.
