Local Teacher Honored as 2025-2026 Regional Teacher of the Year!
COOS COUNTY, Oregon — In a heartwarming surprise during Friday's school assembly, Sunset Middle School 6th-grade math teacher Kimberly Agricola was honored as regional Teacher of the Year by the Oregon Department of Education.
The recognition celebrates educators who demonstrate exceptional dedication and skill in Oregon's classrooms. The statewide Teacher of the Year Program highlights excellence in education, with recipients serving as ambassadors for the teaching profession throughout the state of Oregon.
For Agricola, the surprise announcement became even greater significance with her son present at the assembly. "I think the best part was that my son was here, so it felt really great to show him that mommy works really hard and I'm not just away from him for no reason," she shared. "It was fun for him to get to see that moment—it was just special to have everyone here. My former principal was here, my kid was here, it was just nice."
The regional Teacher of the Year recognition follows a comprehensive evaluation process managed by Oregon's 19 Education Service Districts. Candidates can be nominated by students, colleagues, administrators, friends, or family members, making the honor a true community recognition.
Applicants undergo a thorough assessment by diverse panels of regional representatives, who review testimonials, letters of support, and detailed applications.
The Oregon Teacher of the Year Program recognizes that exceptional educators bring innovation, energy, and in-depth content knowledge to their classrooms every day. These teachers serve students across all grade levels, from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, in public schools throughout the state.
Regional winners, such as Agricola, represent the highest standards of the teaching profession and serve as inspirational examples of educational excellence in their communities.
Agricola's recognition highlights the outstanding educators working in Coos County schools and their dedication to student success.
